Hi,
We have a need to create something like a win app that would be scheduled to
run on the web/reporting server, query the db, pass some parameters to
reports and auto-generate them in pdf format (to be stored in db or on the
same box) to make them available for the website visitors.
Have anybody done something like this before or seen an example of? We tried
to do something similar when reporting services when it just came out but
were unable to implement. Would really appreciate any advice on how to
tackle this!Thanks! Are you using data-driven subscription feature for this? Is it only
available with Enterprise SQL edition?

Exchange Reporting Pack
Has anyone been able to successfully install the Exchange reporting pack
without also having Visual Studio .Net installed? I've tried but receive the
following error: "Object Reference not set to an instance of object" and the
install fails.I have the same problem and would really like to find out if it is possible
to install without VS.Net. I've tried installing not only the Exchange
reporting pack but also the Financial which is what I'm really interested in
now.

We have a Two Server Deployment: CRM, Reporting Services and IIS on
one Server and our SQL Server 2000 Backend on another Server - which
happends to be a Named Instance.
Because we have a Named Instance as our SQL Server backend......In
order to get Reporting Services to work correctly, we had temporarily
disable the EDW (Environmental Diagnostics Wizard) in CRM using a
registry key change in order for the the 'canned' CRM Reports to work
against our SQL Named Instance (see this link for more info on this

Well... now I am attempting to get the reports in the Exchange Report
Pack for Reporting Servives to work. What I did so far was: Turned off
EDW in the registry on the CRM Server, installed the Exchange Report
Pack, attached the Sample Databases to my CRM named Instance, created
an ODBC connection to the sample Exchange database, and uiploaded the
Reports from the Report Pack and configured them to use the ODBC
connection to the Sample database. Now when I try and run any of the
Exchange Reports, I get this error:
An error has occurred during report processing. (rsProcessingAborted)
Get Online Help
Cannot create a connection to data source 'SSW Exchange Reporter'.
(rsErrorOpeningConnection) Get Online Help
Login failed for user '(null)'. Reason: Not associated with a trusted
SQL Server connection.
Has anyone gotten this to work or can anyone help'?Are you sure that this isn't a simple double-hop problem?
We should ask our Active Directory Wizards what they know about
double-hop and then run this by them if they look at us with a blank
stare

sensitive and cannot be delegated" in its Active Directory properties
of domain D. Please refer to [1] on how to configure this on Active
Directory machine.
(5) The service account under which the SQL instance is running must
be "trusted for delegation", configured in Active Directory. If the
service is running as "NT AUTHORITY\SYSTEM" or "NT
AUTHORITY\NETWORK SERVICE", the computer must be "trusted for
delegation". Please refer to [1] on how to configure this on Active
Directory Machine. You need to have domain admin privilege to do/verify
so.
Also; I think that we may need to run 'setspn' with the service account
for the sql box in order to allow it to participate in a double-hop
authentication..

Exchange Pack for Reporting Services
Has anyone successfully installed the Exchange Pack for Reporting Services?
I've attempted a couple of times and continue to get "Object Reference not
set to an instance of object", which causes the install to rollback.
Does anyone know how to correct this problem?

It seems the version available on SSW's site is different and

Is there any way to get data from a real install of Exchange into the
database for the Exchange Pack for Reporting Services, or is it just to look
at pretty reports that mean nothing to us?
Am I missing something here?
MichaelThe goal of the report packs is to show reports one might write using
reporting services. It is not necessarily to ship solutions that monitor
the specified application. This particular report pack contains a reference
to a tool from SSW for a product they support for extracting data about
exchange. This could be a start. Alternatively, you can use an ETL tool
such as DTS to do so, though I'm sure tools such as SSW Exchange Extraction
Service provide additional analytics.

Exchange & Reporting server
i recently read an article on how you could do reports on your exchange
environment with the SQL 2000 report pack for Exchange.

I have installed this on my SQL box and am unable to access the 13
predefined reports. Could someone assist me and let me know if there are

Do you have to have sql and exchange on the same box?
I uninstalled and then reinstalled and now i am getting this error
"Object reference not set to instance of an object"
Any clue to what is the problem?

Thanks.|||Some people are hitting some but in setup but we have not been able to repro
it here. You might want to take a look at the log file. You don't need
Exchange on the box at all.

I'm not sure, but it could have something to do with the fact that in some cases when executing a report, the URL can contain an execution ID. The execution is specific to the session and user running the report. When the session times out, or the URL is copied or used by someone else, errors may appear indication that the execution is not valid.
The URL in the error message contains a Execution ID and so this URL is only valid for some time and only for the user who started the report.

I increased PF Usage Memory size, but that does not work

I have seen the same issue. I believe that the MS Development Environment
for Reporting Services has a memory leak. I was cutting and pasting items
and watched the resident memory of the program grow by over 100 megs.
I work around this by occasionally shutting down the MSDE and coming back in.
Not sure if a fix is in the works. Hopefully so!

I increased PF Usage Memory size, but that does not work

I have seen the same issue. I believe that the MS Development Environment
for Reporting Services has a memory leak. I was cutting and pasting items
and watched the resident memory of the program grow by over 100 megs.
I work around this by occasionally shutting down the MSDE and coming back in.
Not sure if a fix is in the works. Hopefully so!

excell export doesn't work
I have a report with multiple tables, when I trie to export this report to
excell
it reporting services returns an error message:
Exception of type
Microsoft.ReportingServices.ReportRendering.ReportRenderingException was
thrown. (rrRenderingError) Get Online Help

Excel reports to RS
We have several extensive reports in Excel that I
would like to port over to Reporting Services (am in process of testing
SQL/RS 2005), if at all possible. From what I understand, the only way to do
this is via a third party piece of software, such as OfficeWriterSE for
ASP by softartisans.com...
A couple questions:
1. Is there an open source alternative to the commercial third party
software (the cost of OfficeWriterSE is way beyond our budget)?
2. Does Microsoft plan on ever offering the capability of importing Excel
reports into RS? (I do like the ability of importing Access report
objects, so why not expand to Excel and Word too)?
3. Should I just forget the whole thing?

Greg--My guess is that you should give it up. My guess is the 3rd party tool
allows you to create reports in Excel that are RS reports, not that it
importants existing Excel sheets into RS. Excel has an ability to be
unstructured that RS does not have which make it in my mind highly unlikely
you will ever see a tool from MS to do what you want. Access is very
structured (it is a database product after all) which is why they could
import Access reports.

to upload to your heart's content all the Excel files you want to.
They'll open as Excel files within the Report Server's browser with full
Excel functionality. No need to shell out money for a 3rd party solution.

Excel Report - Large File
SQL Server 2005 reporting service is being used to generate a large excel
report with about 30,000 rows. The size of file generated is ~15MB. but if
the same file is opened in Excel 2003 and saved back in XLS format itself,
the size of the file reduces to approximately 50% of the original size.
One of the initial guesses why this is occuring is that SQL Server 2005
reporting service generates unicode strings for the report data elements,
while excel saving it back, saves it as ANSI. (the report is in english only).

This is just a thought, but it might be related to the Excel export
driver that is used in SSRS: to your point, that it could be adding
extra items. One way to check this out is to probably run a comparison
between the 2 files (maybe using something like a trial version of
Araxis Merge >> http://www.araxis.com/merge/ ). Also, I'm not sure if
you want to go this far, but if the size is a major issue you can
either zip the excel file programmatically with a third party DLL (a
few open source ones available) -or- create a small ASP.NET
application (or console EXE) that basically reads in the Excel file
(via streamreader) and does a string replace on all occurrences of the
undesired format in question and stream it back out (via
streamwriter). Of course, I'm not 100% sure that this will work with
Excel; however, it's worth a shot. Also, I think that there is a
technology called Automation in .NET that might be able to help w/
this. Hope this helps.

rsreportserver.config (note commenting out the original line):

But my client needs to the report to be exported to excel only, as there is
significant formatting around the data. As you have observed, the device
setting for excel does not have the encoding options as in CSV.

difference in size when I save from Excel (versus the Excel created by RS).

is 8 MB, but when opened in excel and than saved, it's 1.6 MB, which rules
out Unicode. When I opened the excel file in notepad, I noticed there's lots
of binary data in the tail of the 8 MB file, but the 1.6MB file doesn't have
them. I am still investigating, please let me know if you find a solution.
There's not much formatting in the report, just the column headings, so I
can't figure out what the excess binary data is.

the characters take two spaces, eg. "n e w " vs. "new" (in the smaller file).

You could see if exporting to CSV ASCII format makes for a smaller file.
This will open up appropriately in Excel 2003 (Unicode shoves each row into
a single cell).
I decided to try the same thing with the Excel entry but I did not see any
difference.

Status and stop and start Report Server. It only takes a few seconds to do
this. It will cause the configuration file changes to be processed.

But my client needs to the report to be exported to excel only, as there is
significant formatting around the data. As you have observed, the device
setting for excel does not have the encoding options as in CSV.

difference in size when I save from Excel (versus the Excel created by RS).
One other issue, are you on SP2?

is 8 MB, but when opened in excel and than saved, it's 1.6 MB, which rules
out Unicode. When I opened the excel file in notepad, I noticed there's lots
of binary data in the tail of the 8 MB file, but the 1.6MB file doesn't have
them. I am still investigating, please let me know if you find a solution.
There's not much formatting in the report, just the column headings, so I
can't figure out what the excess binary data is.

the characters take two spaces, eg. "n e w " vs. "new" (in the smaller file).

Excel Rendering updated?
I'm wondering whether Katmai Reporting Services will do a better job of "rendering" to Excel. Quite Frequently, I create nice looking reports for the PDF renderer, only to to make a separate copy of that same report and mangle it so that I can get half of what I wanted.
For example:
1. I am frequently lining up the left and right edges of text boxes everywhere, as to not generate way too many columns in excel. As a result, I'm often formatting for excel to look, often ignoring the formatting needs of my data. The worst case scenario of this is when I had two rows of textboxes (roughly seven textboxes each) , and the PDF renderer did a beautiful job. However the Excel renderer would randomly choose to push some of the textboxes down into another Excel row, giving a checker-board look to my report. Hours were wasted in attempts to reformat a separate copy of the report to eliminate the Checkerboard look, to no avail.
2. Formatting Data in any way (FormatCurrency(), FormatDate(), ect) converts the data type to string, and my excel reports are flooded with smart tags saying "Convert to Number". These reports do not gracefully import into my client's applications. In addition to this, there is no way to format the textboxes so that Excel's Cell formatting will be given to the cells (right click on a cell, "Format Cells" and choose a category and some options with different categories). I can leave the data unformatted, but it looks SO unprofessional. So I have been evaluating several other Excel reporting packages that will allow me to Format Cells without changing the data types of my data to a string.
3. Images. Yikes! The PDF renderer has had some occasional glitches with images that some vendors have given us. We have thousands of vendors that give us images created with a large spectrum of consumer digital cameras. Occasionally, the PDF renderer refuses to render (a large gamut of error messages have been seen), while the TIFF renderer will suceed. I have even had an image (still do if you would find them helpful) that will not even render through the TIFF renderer. I had to open the image and "Save As " to get the TIFF renderer to work, but the PDF renderer would still not work. So we had to create some backup tools to "Resave the images" and also "use the TIFF version instead", both of which cost us personnel time.
Please let me know if these will be fixed in the Katmai RS?!?
For #1, the Excel rendering has improved in Katmai, mainly around reducing the number of merged cells. However, it looks like you are looking for more of a data renderer, which is currently not planned.
For #2, why are you using the Format... functions instead of setting the format property? If you set the format property, you should get numbers with the appropriate formatting.
For #3, it sounds like you are running into a bug, either with our PDF renderer or the framework image libraries. Have you filed repro cases at http://connect.microsoft.com?

Excel Rendering updated?

The Reporting group in our company uses SRS 2005 to generate most reports for
the Company. Many of these reports are distributed automatically to our
clients. An increasing number of these reports are distributed as Excel
spreadsheets. These Excel reports generally contain multiple worksheets.
For customer convenience, these worksheets should be named. The portion of
Report Services that writes the Excel files, is apparently not capable of
naming these worksheets with user specified names when there are multiple
worksheets. However when only one worksheet is present, it is named with the
title of the report. Is there a way to name the worksheets dynamically as the
report is generated? If not, is it possible to write a custom renderer to do
so, or to extend the excel renderer? I appreciate any code examples.

Excel Render - Print Header on Each Page
Hello Microsoft or Forum Members:
This seems like a simple Microsoft Based Reporting System 101 feature...But I can not find out how to do it (among other things that seem like it should work with Microsoft rendering to Microsoft).
How do I make the SSRS 2005 Header for the Report print on each of the pages in excel once it is rendered from SSRS?
All I want is an answer by MSFT that says "YES" it can be done and how or "No" it is not currently available.

I believe that would be the answer. It seems to me that the Excel export renders only the content of the report, not so much the layout of the page. A page rendered in an internet browser is not quite the same as a page rendered in excel.

Excel page setup / Email subscriptions
Hi,
I'm a newbie when it comes to Reporting Services, so please bear with me.
I am having 2 issues:
1) I am trying to get an exported Excel report to automatically select the
correct paper size. I have a report that is fairly wide, so I set the
report page up to 14" x 8.5" (Legal) and set the margins to .25" on each
side. Based on the limited info online, I was hoping this would translate
into Excel's Page Setup, but I was wrong. When I open the resulting Excel
workbook, the pages are set up as Landscape (which I hoped would happen),
but they are still Letter (11" x 8.5") sized. Is there any way to force
Excel to include Legal in the page setup?
2) I set up several Windows users with the role "Browsers" in Reporting
Services. I want them to be able to subscribe to a report via email. When
the user creates a new subscription, the "To" field is disabled, and is
populated only with their Windows username (ie, "jmarx"). The email
generated by the system fails (I think) due to not being able to resolve the
username into an email address. The server being used to send the emails is
Exchange 2000, and everything is integrated with Active Directory. If I go
to the Reporting Services site (I have all permissions on the site), I can
set up a new subscription with no problems, as the To, Cc, and Bcc fields
are all enabled and I can type in the full email address(es) as needed. The
email(s) get sent with no issues that way. Any ideas on how to map the
usernames to email addresses, thus allowing users with only "Browser" access
to subscribe to reports?

subscribes to a report, only their "username" show up in the TO: box
for email and it is greyed out so they can't change it. Hopefully,
someone from Microsoft is monitoring this board and will provide a
solution...

following in your RSReportServer.config file:
<SendEmailToUserAlias>True</SendEmailToUserAlias>
to
<SendEmailToUserAlias>False</SendEmailToUserAlias>
I believe you can set <DefaultHostName> to the hostname (ie, microsoft.com),
and that will be appended to all users' aliases. So if all your users are
in the same domain for email purposes, you could leave
<SendEmailToUserAlias> at True and enter your hostname in <DefaultHostName>.
Unfortunately for me, I have users in 2 domains, so this won't work. I
would really like to know how to map user aliases to email addresses, but I
haven't had the time to figure it out yet (or if it can even be done).
Changing <SendEmailToUserAlias> to False gives me an interim solution
anyway.

populated only with their Windows username (ie, "jmarx"). The email
generated by the system fails (I think) due to not being able to resolve the
username into an email address. The server being used to send the emails is
Exchange 2000, and everything is integrated with Active Directory. If I go
to the Reporting Services site (I have all permissions on the site), I can
set up a new subscription with no problems, as the To, Cc, and Bcc fields
are all enabled and I can type in the full email address(es) as needed. The
email(s) get sent with no issues that way. Any ideas on how to map the
usernames to email addresses, thus allowing users with only "Browser" access
to subscribe to reports?

subscribes to a report, only their "username" show up in the TO: box
for email and it is greyed out so they can't change it. Hopefully,
someone from Microsoft is monitoring this board and will provide a
solution...

I finally figured that one out from searching google groups, but I'm not
entirely happy with the answer. You can enable this field by changing the
following in your RSReportServer.config file:
<SendEmailToUserAlias>True</SendEmailToUserAlias>
to
<SendEmailToUserAlias>False</SendEmailToUserAlias>
I believe you can set <DefaultHostName> to the hostname (ie, microsoft.com),
and that will be appended to all users' aliases. So if all your users are
in the same domain for email purposes, you could leave
<SendEmailToUserAlias> at True and enter your hostname in <DefaultHostName>.
Unfortunately for me, I have users in 2 domains, so this won't work. I
would really like to know how to map user aliases to email addresses, but I
haven't had the time to figure it out yet (or if it can even be done).
Changing <SendEmailToUserAlias> to False gives me an interim solution
anyway.

Excel Issue
Does Microsoft have any plans for an excel - add on to Reporting Services?
I love the product, but my users hate the way RS renders to excel. There are
merged cells - and addition blank columns between the table columns. Sorting
is therefore a nightmare. My users would prefer reports from a visual basic
front end with all data coded to excel -- something I was hoping Reporting
Services would resolve. It has been my experience that Excel is every
accountants #1 software, it is to bad microsoft didn't take this into
consideration when developing RS.You can design reports to export properly to Excel.
What I do is the following. I add additional header rows and then merge
either the whole row together of a couple of cells and then put in what I
normally would have put in a textbox. You would think that merging cells
together this way would cause a problem with merged cells in Excel but it
does not. If you select your header and your data you can sort, while if you
have exported with a textbox above the table you get the problem with merged
cells when trying to sort.
Below is another solution from another poster. I haven't tried it but it
seems reasonable:

The Table can be the full width or slightly less of your page. I have best

columns in the table, etc) but it still caused merged cells. I don't believe
it matters what you have in the page header or footer - I can put multiple
textboxes on the same row in my page footer and it works ok.
